Iron Man and Speed Racer

Journal Entry: Sun May 18, 2008, 5:10 PM
  • Mood: Uneasy
  • Listening to: Go Speed Racer Go Remix - Ali Dee
I've been on a movie watching warpath this week, too many movies out there I wanna watch now LOL. But my poor wallet could only afford so much.

Finally got around to watching Hitman and Ocean's 13. They were ok-ish and all but for me it was like watching the news in a OH, SO THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED manner.

Never mind that. Onto the new stuff!

My buddy Korim told me to watch Iron Man just for Robert Downey Jr, so I gave in and was blown away at how golden he was on screen. The guy knows what he's doing with his material. Second he slips out and the villain came in the movie went kaput for me. Storytelling in the beginning was nice and tight, just the way I like it. Definitely a cut above most other superhero movies. Stayed for the after credits scene. Sequel do want, but not sure if I also want to see the Hulk just for the cameo as well. Definitely gonna cop the soundtrack when I get around to it.

Speed Racer I was obviously told to take with a huge grain of seasalt but main appeal was the pushing of nostalgia buttons, so I steeled myself and watched it last Friday. There was nostalgia, there was OOOH PURDY HEADACHE INDUCING COLOURS, and lots of icky ARUGAHGAGH cheesiness that rotted at band camp. The kind that sorta makes you want to kill the kids on screen, and probably some of the ones yakking away and kicking your chair behind you. It was LONNNNNNNG, there's a lotta fat that's gotta be trimmed. Extraneous, useless scenes aside, at times there was too much compacted exposition that flies too fast especially when the villain was almost motormouthing off his lines, and others very loose and sluggish. Emile and most of the actors did their bit well considering the written material they had to work with. Rain was massive LAWL, I was totally not expecting to see the guy show up at all. Christina Ricci stole the show for me, she was damn adorable. And very hawt for someone who's only 5'1. Special effects, let's face it, a no brainer. Very stylish, very experimental in a sorta-works-and-sorta-doesn't-but-props-for-trying kinda way. Movie score was nice and unintrusive in the film. The song that pops up at the credits was kinda cute in small does, but so sickeningly sweet your ears will bleed on multiple listens as I'm starting to find out LOL.

So yeah, that's pretty much it so far for me.

----

Movies I'm dying to see:
The Dark Knight, Wall-E, Genius Party, Batman: Gotham Knight

Movies I'm sorta inclined to seeing:
Hancock, Get Smart, Love Guru, You Don't Wanna Mess With the Zohan, Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express

Movies I'm likely to be harrassed into watching:
The Incredible Hulk, The X Files, HellBoy 2, Wanted, Indiana Jones

Awesome! I'll be sure to tell Korim you dug his linework on Neozoic.

Look out for #5 though, I'm pretty sure it's up for preorders at TFAW and Heavyink.

Omg, I love Neozoic, and a huge draw of it comes from the art. I'm actually looking for an artist with a similar style for my own comic but it's so hard to find one as good as you for an amateur like me. Keep it up, I've read #1-3 and I've got #4 ordered and I'm looking forward to getting my dirty little hands on it.

Picked up the copy of Atomic Robo with Neozoic in it at my local comic shop today for free comic day. You just might have me hooked. :) I'm looking forward to putting my own comic out later this year.
